We reach the southern approach. Crooked coastline unfurls behind, inlets and headlands snake their way to that broad estuary named Humber. Viewed from above or on a map, it looks a likely spot for this country to at last split in two, divide at the spine, sever north from south. Britannia’s head and chest dash to pieces in the Irish Sea, her midriff and legs sink into the Channel.
Asphalt rises like a muzzle, threatens the sky with wheeled bullets. Just in time to miss the clouds, the road curves left, heads north. We follow.
Steel cords hang either side, the future secured by their strength. Beneath is the deck, a conveyor but still. Deliver us northward, o’ carriageway, my heart cries from within. My mouth makes a fist to hold the thought.
Suspension cables rise as we approach the first tower. Stanchions flutter by, slice horizon into pages of an immense flick book thumbed by some great colossus. I think of those who fling their lives at the spaces in between to sign this giant book, immortalise themselves in death, premature, wet.
I shall not follow yet. I shall not yet follow. Yet follow I shall not.
We pass the concrete tower. North Sea sees us now, whips up wild wind to buffet our bubble. We shake but are not threatened. Romans crossed these murky waters, at a causeway further inland. As that unquenchable mud drank down their comrades, perhaps the rest wondered what such a land was worth.
I wonder too about that shifting skinless mud.
Is its belly filled?
Or has it room for me?
